Texans on Mission nonprofit to send team to Nepal to help with flood relief

Dallas-based nonprofit Texans on Mission is sending a five-member relief team to Nepal to assist flood survivors. The floods have caused hundreds of deaths and left thousands of people missing, authorities say. The volunteers will focus on immediate needs, including distributing food, cookware and water-filter equipment. The group plans to travel with at least 100 water filters for villages without power and will also bring more advanced filtration gear to aid long-term rebuilding. Texans on Mission Chief Mission Officer John Hall said the effort is meant to be a strike force capable of mobilizing quickly and addressing urgent needs on the ground. The team will work alongside one of the nonprofit's long-term ministry partners, which will mobilize other churches and community leaders in Nepal. Experienced volunteers were hand-selected, given expected treacherous conditions. Hall noted that some team members have previously worked in Nepal and are familiar with the local culture and environment, coordinating with local leaders ahead of the mission. The group is also bringing in a partner to conduct search and rescue operations. Officials say the operation could benefit thousands of families, including at least two North Texas residents whose relatives are still missing. The team plans to stay for at least two weeks.
